The University of Missouri System announced that Dr. Kristin Sobolik has been selected to serve as chancellor of the University of Missouri–St. Louis, effective immediately.

Prior to her appointment, Sobolik served in the dual role of interim chancellor since last fall when chancellor emeritus Tom George retired, and provost.

“Dr. Sobolik has a demonstrated track record of supporting student success and retention at UMSL,” UM System president, Dr. Mun Y. Choi, said. “In addition, she had demonstrated success in growing research, building connections with St. Louis leaders and engaging donors. I am confident that she is the right leader for UMSL during this most critical time.”

During her tenure at UMSL, where she oversees more than 16,000 students, Sobolik has led the development and implementation of the Strategic Plan 2018-2023, and research expenditures have increased 55% since her appointment as provost. Among a number of other major accomplishments, Sobolik has worked with faculty leaders to introduce new academic programs in areas such as computing technology, cybersecurity, international relations, actuarial science and entrepreneurship.

Sobolik earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Iowa, and a master’s and doctorate in anthropology from Texas A&M University. Prior to her service at UMSL, she served as dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Wright State University.

Our sister publication, Gazelle magazine, featured Sobolik in its coveted “The Influence List 2019.”
