Court Denies St. Louis County Board of Elections Request to Postpone April 7 Election

The St. Louis County Board of Elections Commissioners will meet soon to discuss options after a request to postpone elections was denied.

In an effort to protect St. Louis County voters and elections workers, last week, the BOE petitioned  the Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern District, to postpone the April 7 municipal elections and to move the election date to April 28, and to authorize a vote-by-mail. The BOE also requested a delay until the August 2020 primary election.

“The Missouri Court of Appeals denied our request for a vote-in-mail election on April 28,” said commissioner Peggy Barnhart. “They also denied the request to move the election to August. They suggested we find an earlier date.”

Meanwhile, some local and regional political candidates are being proactive by changing how they are engaging voters. In lieu of fundraising events, democratic secretary of state candidate Yinka Faleti is holding virtual events, the first one being a town hall meeting on March 31, on his official Facebook page.

“Even though this pandemic is dominating the news and almost every aspect of our lives, we still want to take an opportunity to talk with you and learn what issues you’re concerned about with the Secretary of State’s office,” said Faleti, in a campaign email. “This is a necessary precaution as we continue to practice “social distancing” to help suppress the pandemic.”

The St. Louis region currently has six confirmed cases of the coronavirus.
