Every 10 years, the federal government surveys each state, city and county for updated population data, and statistics help determine the number of seats each state holds in the U.S. House of Representatives and how billions of dollars in federal funds will be allocated by state, local and federal lawmakers for the next 10 years.
There is a direct, proportional relationship between census participation, accurate population counts and earned federal dollars flowing into communities, which means that when households don’t complete the census, communities are impacted.
The census is mandated by the Constitution, and everyone living in the United States is required to participate. The U.S. Census has generated an interactive map to show how your community currently ranks. The rankings are shown in states, cities and counties. Here are a few highlights from our region from top to bottom, shown by county and city, based on the percentage of households that have participated.
