After a protest in solidarity with community members of all races and backgrounds protesting the death of George Floyd, events turned dangerous Monday night in the city of St. Louis.
In the afternoon, the community action group Expect Us led protesters on a march down Market Street to the Gateway Arch, where they surrounded the arch in unity and remembrance of those who have died as a result of racism and injustice, and in support of those who have been wrongfully convicted. The group also held a peaceful protest over the weekend in Clayton and University City with the following action plan:
By nightfall, the protests had turned to violence with well-known downtown establishments vandalized and looted.
“A select group of individuals with their own destructive agendas looted businesses, set fires, burned down buildings, attacked first responders, shot four of our officers, and most tragically, killed a retired city police captain.” Krewson said. “My condolences go out to the friends, family and colleagues of David Dorn.”
In response to the violence, Krewson issued a citywide nighttime curfew that begins at 9 p.m. on Tuesday night and continues through 6 a.m., nightly, until further notice. Under the terms of the curfew, no unauthorized person shall remain on a city street or sidewalk during the hours of the curfew or shall remain in a motor vehicle.
